Preterm birth has been difficult to study and prevent because of its complex syndromic nature. The INTERGROWTH-21st Project presents a new approach to this problem. This paper explains the results of the first application of a prototype classification system for preterm birth based on twelve phenotypes, using data from the Newborn Cross-Sectional Study of the INTERGROWTH-21st Project.
